Redemptive Violence
The God complex is a {Redemptive violence} personal apotheosis of righteousness an infallible image of self, based on retribution and revenge. “To me belong the vengeance!” Roman 12:19
Ray Rice domestic violence and Adrian Peterson child abuse are events that I have been asked to comment on. I am glad someone asked, said events, deserve more than superficial and bogus analysis. The discussions is necessary, however, mostly a sophomoric and academic exercise. Given, the nature of violence in this society the discussions are not sufficient. There are many issues that must be addressed if one is to have an intelligent discussion about violence, child abuse, child labor sweatshops, date rape etc.
Ethical and moral positions are never part of the conversation. Responsible dialog on violence would include behavior and attitudes of officials and referees, coaches and owners, sport commentators and corporate sponsors. Why is Mr. Goodell the only one responsible for Mr. Rice and Mr. Peterson actions? All three are part of the comfortable seduction of the violent society. Not strong enough to withstand the comfortable seduction of fear and inadequacies some miss the mark. Just identify a few individuals and let them represent the norm in the culture of professional sports. Bad behavior cancels out good behavior good behavior cannot cancel out bad behavior. Repentance is necessary to create the momentum to overcome bad behavior. Solidarity for issues of violence must be the proper response.
The etymological noun form of violence in the present participle vehemens, and vehemeny—, seems to suggest from the Latin ve, vehe prefix meaning lacking, + mens, ment—, mind. Certainly a vehement person tends to lack control of his mind. Thus vehemence leads to violence. The lack of impulse control is at heart of violence. Violence is Violence! Violence is a noun! Adjectives with deep emotional impact excited individual behavior when control is abandoned. In such responses we use terms like Domestic violence, Race violence, Police violence, etc. [genocide] and all are forms consistent with the bifurcation of violence. The descriptive adjective will determine the commitment and opposition to violence. Violent horrors of man’s inhumanity to man diminish all human beings.
This nation was created and conceived in racism and genocide. Presently in the nation violence has been reduced to suggest that some human life has value greater than others. The concern for violent situation is based on who administers the violence and who receive the violence and what type of violence. Violence is not value free. The voices in opposition to violence must seek a pure and consistent expression. There must be outrage for all forms of violence, not just for our personal preference. I am in opposition to violence whether they come from the voices of Congress or the streets of Chicago, or the President of the United States.
I am in opposition to violence when it is perpetrated on any human being. The stain on the national culture is the psychopathic paradigm of redemptive violence. The following individuals who have diagnosed and explained Western thought have described the characteristics of behavioral violence. Sigmund Freud identified it as sexual aggression and destruction; Adler has identified it as the need for power and control; Jung identified same as the need for the collective consciousness. B.F. Skinner hypothesized that appropriate controls and technological behavior are necessary to alter the nature of impulse control for violent behavior. Michael Bradley further elaborated on Sigmund Freud is aggressive sexuality and use the term ‘dimorphism’ representing the extreme aggressiveness.
Redemptive Violence is normative, predicated upon the inability to be intimate. Redemptive violence provides rationale for such violent behavior. Marimba Ani presents the seminal work on the psychopathic personality in her book “Yurugu” where she identifies a uniquely aggressive response to others violates the universal principle of complementarity.
